INTRODUCTION:
Join Metso's Product Engineering team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and help shape the future of mining technology. You'll lead research and development for High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) equipment, an energy-efficient technology that's replacing outdated grinding methods worldwide. This role puts you at the forefront of a mining revolution, working with a passionate, global team of specialists across the Americas and Europe who collaborate daily with colleagues in Brazil, India, China, Australia, and Switzerland. With HPGR technology only 30 years old and still evolving, you'll tackle meaningful engineering challenges that directly impact sustainability and efficiency in the global mining industry.
THE TEAM YOU BELONG TO:
You'll report to the Engineering Manager within the Grinding, Bulk and Pyro Business Line, part of Metso's rapidly growing Services Business Area. Your HPGR-focused team currently includes 1 engineers based in York, PA and 1 in Brazil, and this team is part of a larger global product engineering organization.
The team works seamlessly across time zones, with particularly strong collaboration between Santiago and York. We are looking for someone with deep R&D credentials who can bring innovation and technical leadership to the team. The team culture is built on passion for work and result-focused collaboration. This is a growing team in a growing business, where those who join tend to stay long-term because of the exciting technical challenges ahead. The role requires someone who thrives in a distributed, global environment and can build strong relationships across continents while maintaining focus on product innovation.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Your core responsibilities include:
- Drive research and development for HPGR equipment improvements and innovations, dedicating approximately 70% of your time to advancing product engineering and developing next-generation solutions
- Oversee detail design work in standard product development and delivery projects, ensuring projects meet engineering, quality, cost, and schedule requirements
- Perform advanced engineering calculations and FEA modeling to validate safe and optimal function of equipment for new designs, refurbishments, upgrades, or retrofits
- Develop detailed scopes of work and prepare mechanical drawings using CAD software to facilitate fabrication, construction, and installation of HPGR equipment and components
- Collaborate with Product Lines and management to establish engineering design guidelines and standards for upgrades, retrofits, and refurbishments of HPGR equipment
- Provide technical leadership and supervision to team members, conducting failure analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product performance
- Travel to customer sites and offices (approximately quarterly, 1-2 weeks per trip) to assess physical constraints, support technical troubleshooting, and participate in development meetings across the Americas
WHO YOU ARE:
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Approximately 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering with strong focus on research and development, product improvement, or product development
- Proficiency in CAD software (Autodesk Inventor preferred, but other platforms acceptable)

- Strong background in manufacturing and materials knowledge with experience conducting failure analysis
- Project supervision or technical team leadership experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with ability to create technical reports and executive summaries
- Working knowledge of SAP or similar ERP systems
Preferred qualifications:
- Previous experience in grinding equipment, mining equipment, or adjacent heavy industrial machinery (HPGR experience is NOT required)
- International work experience or proven success collaborating across cultures and time zones
- Advanced Excel skills and project management tool proficiency
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU
You'll be joining Metso at an inflection point for the mining industry. HPGR technology represents the future of mineral processing as traditional Ball Mills from the 1950s and 1960s no longer meets the world's needs for energy efficiency and sustainability. This is your opportunity to work on cutting-edge engineering challenges that have a real global impact, contributing to more sustainable mining practices while advancing technology that's still in the early stages of its development curve.
As a senior engineer on a growing team, you'll have significant autonomy to shape R&D direction and influence product strategy. The role offers genuine intellectual challenge with opportunities to work on novel engineering problems, and see your innovations implemented in mining operations worldwide. You'll develop expertise in specialized a technology while working alongside passionate engineers who share your commitment to technical excellence.
Metso's Services Business Area has experienced aggressive growth in recent years, creating strong career trajectories for talented engineers who join now. The company's global scale (17,000 employees across 51 countries) provides stability and resources, while the specialized nature of the HPGR team ensures your work remains focused and impactful. You'll gain international exposure through regular collaboration with colleagues across multiple continents and quarterly travel to customer sites and technical meetings.
The team values innovation, R&D capability, and engineering fundamentals over narrow specialization, making this an excellent opportunity for accomplished mechanical engineers looking to apply their skills to meaningful, future-oriented challenges in the mining industry.
