Introduction

 

 

We are looking for a Chief Project Engineer – Bulk Materials Handling to join our Engineering, Bulk Materials Handling (BMH) team. In this role, you will serve as the technical authority responsible for delivering engineered solutions across upgrade, retrofit, and greenfield BMH projects, ensuring safe, compliant, and high-performing system designs that meet customer and project requirements. You will report to the Director of Engineering, BMH. 

This role is based in Pittsburgh, PA.

This role includes approximately 20% travel, including domestic and international travel as required.

You will join a team of engineering professionals focused on bulk materials handling systems, including conveyors, feeders, and heavy industrial equipment. Our team plays a key role in delivering engineered solutions that support customer operations and drive project success, with a shared focus on safety, performance, and continuous improvement. 
We collaborate closely with product engineering, project management, manufacturing, supply chain, and field service teams, as well as customers and suppliers.

What you’ll do

 

 

 

  • Lead engineering delivery for bulk materials handling projects, taking ownership of technical decisions, performance, and compliance with standards and specifications
  • Develop and execute engineering strategies from concept through project completion, including defining milestones and deliverables
  • Perform and review engineering calculations for equipment sizing, load conditions, structural integrity, and material flow performance
  • Define system requirements, interfaces, and operational parameters across mechanical and structural disciplines
  • Provide design oversight for 3D models, layouts, fabrication drawings, and bills of materials, ensuring integration of safety, operability, and maintenance access
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, constructability evaluations, and readiness-for-release reviews
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, supply chain, and field teams to support project execution, installation, and commissioning
  • Mentor engineers and designers while promoting engineering standards, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives 

 

 


What you’ll bring

 

 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field
  • 10–12+ years of experience in bulk materials handling, mining, or heavy industrial equipment engineering
  • Proven experience leading engineering scopes from concept through commissioning
  • Strong knowledge of BMH systems such as conveyors, feeders, chutes, and large welded fabrications
  • Proficiency in mechanical and/or structural calculations, including hand calculations, spreadsheets, or FEA
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (preferably Inventor), PLM/Vault systems, and ERP platforms
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts and collaborate across global teams
  • Ability to manage technical delivery while maintaining schedule and budget alignment

 

 


Nice to have:

 

 

 

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure
  • Experience in OEM environments
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ISO, CEMA, AISC, AWS, ASME
  • Field experience supporting installation, commissioning, or performance testing
