Project Engineer

Primary Location:

Newcastle, NSW, AU

Metso is innovating the future of bulk material handling through advanced automation. Our Axo33 product platform delivers real-time digital modelling, intelligent decision-making and high-reliability automation for mine-to-port operations. Deployed globally, Axo33 systems support critical infrastructure across stockyards, rail and shipping environments — improving throughput, storage efficiency and operational safety.

We are seeking an Automation Engineer to join our Axo33 engineering team and contribute to the development, integration and delivery of industrial software systems used in live operational environments.

About the Role

As an Automation Engineer, you will contribute to the design, development, testing and deployment of software components across the Axo33 platform. You will work closely with Senior Engineers, Product Owners, Systems Engineers and other technical team members to deliver reliable software solutions integrated with real-world industrial systems.

This is a hands-on engineering role with a strong focus on system integration, real-time processing, industrial automation and practical software delivery. You will support the development of product features, contribute to technical design discussions, and help deliver robust systems for mining and bulk materials handling operations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain high-quality software across backend systems and real-time processing components
  • Contribute to APIs, services and data pipelines for operational systems
  • Support integration with industrial systems, including PLC/SCADA, telemetry and third-party platforms
  • Assist with the development of algorithms for real-time optimisation and control of industrial equipment
  • Work with sensor data such as LiDAR, positioning and telemetry to support modelling and decision systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver product features from design through to deployment
  • Participate in testing, commissioning support and issue resolution for deployed systems
  • Contribute to code quality, testing practices, documentation and deployment processes
  • Work under the guidance of senior technical staff while building capability across the Axo33 platform

Tech Stack You’ll Work With

  • C++ / C# (core systems and services)
  • Python (data processing, scripting and algorithm development)
  • MATLAB / GNU Octave (modelling, simulation and algorithm development)
  • Postgres / MySQL
  • WebSockets and APIs
  • Git-based source control
  • Jira Agile delivery
  • Linux environments

Highly Regarded Experience

  • Industrial automation or PLC-integrated systems
  • Real-time or distributed systems development
  • Systems integration across software and operational technologies (OT)
  • Automated testing (unit, integration or system-level testing)
  • Experience working with telemetry, sensor data or spatial systems

Bonus Points For

  • Exposure to optimisation algorithms or control systems
  • Practical experience with machine learning or computer vision
  • Familiarity with sensor technologies such as LiDAR or radar
  • Experience with mobile industrial equipment such as stackers, reclaimers or ship loaders
  • Knowledge of bulk materials handling systems, including conveyors, train loaders or dump stations

What You Bring

  • Experience developing software in engineering, automation, industrial or complex technical environments
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a practical engineering mindset
  • Willingness to learn complex systems and contribute to product development
  • Ability to work independently on defined tasks while collaborating effectively within a team
  • Attention to quality, reliability and maintainability
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with both software and operational stakeholders
  • A practical approach suited to delivering software for live industrial environments

Why Metso?

At Metso, your work directly impacts global mining operations and critical supply chains. You’ll be part of a team building software that operates in real industrial environments — where reliability, performance and safety are critical.

You’ll join a collaborative engineering culture within Axo33, with the opportunity to build your technical capability, contribute to globally deployed products, and work on industrial software systems that combine automation, real-time data, digital modelling and operational optimisation.
