JOB TITLE: BULK MATERIAL HANDLING FIELD SERVICE TECHNICIAN-ELECTRICION

We are seeking a qualified technician with experience in servicing Bulk Material Handling (BMH) equipment, including Stackers and Reclaimers, Tipplers, Ship loaders, Ship Unloaders and Bulk Feeders to join our BMH Field Services team. You will be responsible for testing, consulting, maintenance and repairing of BMH equipment on industrial, port and mining customer sites across Africa. You will be required to deliver expert-level service and feedback to customer on equipment performance and production improvement activities relating to the products being supported.  As part of the Metso Field Services team, you will be given Metso-specific product training and certification, but prior hands-on experience is required to be a successful candidate.

 

In this position, you will report to the BMH Field Services Manager for Bulk Material Hub.

 

This position will be based in Kathu.

 

TEAM, YOU BELONG TO

 

You will join a team of Specialists dedicated to installation, commission, planned maintenance and repairs on a host of Metso equipment. We are currently conducting mechanical maintenance as well as electrical work of bulk material handling equipment and other crucial areas of the plant to ensure continued operation.


You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including Customers, Metso product specialist and Field Service Support teams. Our team culture is all about excellent customer service on Metso Equipment. 

 

Purpose of the Role

 

To perform electrical maintenance, fault diagnosis, repairs, and commissioning on stacker reclaimers, wagon tipplers, and associated bulk material handling systems in a surface mining environment, ensuring compliance with South African mining safety regulations and maximizing equipment availability.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

 

Deliver expert-level troubleshooting and inspections on BMH equipment with a view to do detailed business proposals and scope of work on BMH installations.

Execute assembly, installation and commissioning, planned maintenance and repairs on BMH equipment.

Detail testing using Metso technology and optimising the performance of BMH equipment.

Perform all work in a planned and organized manner, follow instructions and plans, and complete work on schedule.

Ensure that work performed meets all statuary requirements and company standards.

Housekeeping duties of the maintenance area.

Ensure a safe work environment and compliance to all SHEQ regulations and standards during the work and ensure compliance with statuary and other regulations as required by law and customer requirements.

Continually review and where necessary suggest changes that will improve the department's occupational health, safety, quality, and efficiency performance.

Other duties as directed by the Line Manager

Willingness to assist in additional reasonable tasks on hand

Complete job cards, logbooks, and inspection report

 

 

WHO YOU ARE

 

Work Experience:

 

Minimum 5-8 years of experience in BMH Equipment (Stackers and Reclaimers), preferably with mineral processing equipment as a maintenance or reliability engineer.

Experience with planning, solution development and maintenance execution in the field.

Experience working in a customer-focused and fast-paced professional environment.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Project, Word and PowerPoint.

Understanding our principles of professional customer relations and interaction

Ability to effectively communicate with a drive and performance orientation

Ability to work in a team atmosphere.

5+ years in mining or heavy industrial environment

Experience on surface mining bulk material handling equipment

Experience with 6.6kV / 11kV systems

Experience with VSDs and large motor control systems

 

Work Environment

 

Surface mining plant

High dust and vibration exposure

Working at heights (boom structures)

Exposure to high voltage systems

Shift work and standby required

 

Education & other requirements

 

Mechanical / Electrical or millwright trade certificate with 10 years minimum applicable job experience. A Bachelor’s degree or similar recognised tertiary qualification in a mechanical or electrical field will be an advantage.

OEM training on BMH Equipment (advantageous)

 1. Electrical Maintenance & Fault Finding

 

Perform planned maintenance and statutory inspections on:

Stacker reclaimers

Wagon tipplers

Conveyor systems

Dust suppression systems

Fault find on:

Large LV & MV motors (up to 11kV)

VSDs and soft starters

Slip ring motors

PLC-controlled systems

Maintain and repair:

MCCs and substations

Protection relays

Field instrumentation and limit switches

Cable reeling drums

Festoon systems

 

 2. Stacker Reclaimer Systems (Surface Mining)

 

Bucket wheel drive systems

Slew, luffing and long-travel drives

Boom conveyor and discharge systems

Interlocking and emergency stop systems

Anti-collision and safety monitoring systems

 

3. Ensure continuous material stacking and reclaiming to maintain plant throughput targets.

 

Rotary drive motors and braking systems

Hydraulic power packs

Wagon positioning and clamping systems

Safety interlocks and control systems

Integration with rail signalling systems

Support high-volume coal/ore offloading operations.

 

 4. PLC & Automation Systems

 

Fault finding on Siemens / Allen Bradley PLC systems ect.

Work on SCADA systems

Interpret electrical schematics and logic diagrams

Test and calibrate field devices

Assist in automation upgrades and optimization

 

 5. Legal Compliance & Safety (South Africa)

 

Comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act

Adhere to mandatory Codes of Practice (COPs)

Perform lock-out and isolation as per mine procedures

Participate in:

Risk assessments

HIRA processes

Toolbox talks

Ensure compliance with SANS electrical standards

Conduct statutory inspections on electrical installations

 

 6. Breakdown & Standby Duties

 

Provide 24/7 breakdown support

Participate in standby roster

Perform root cause analysis (RCA)

Implement corrective and preventative actions

 

 7. Commissioning & Projects

 

Install and terminate MV & LV cables

Assist in commissioning of new plant equipment

Perform protection testing

Participate in shutdown planning and execution
