We’re currently seeking motivated Trades Assistants to support our factory production operations as part of a collaborative and safety-driven team.
This is a residential Karratha-based role on an 8/6 roster.
About the Role
As a Trades Assistant at Metso, you will assist in a variety of workshop and manufacturing tasks to support production targets, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. The role offers exposure to a wide range of equipment and processes within a clean, modern, and well-equipped facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Adhere to Metso’s WHS policies, procedures, and safety programs, prioritising the safety of yourself and others.
- Participate actively in Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Controls (HIRAC) and Safe Work Instructions (SWI) processes.
- Support production operations by assisting tradespeople and operating equipment safely under supervision.
- Perform dogging and basic rigging duties as authorised by your High-Risk Work Licence and site permit systems — including safely slinging, securing, and directing loads during lifting operations using overhead cranes and mobile plant.
- Assist with crane and lifting operations under approved lifting plans, ensuring correct selection of lifting gear and compliance with permit to work and site lifting procedures.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment.
- Carry out tasks from technical drawings, work instructions, and verbal direction.
- Perform minor equipment inspections, maintenance, and cleaning tasks.
- Complete accurate data entry and maintain associated documentation.
- Participate in daily production and pre-start meetings.
- Engage in quality control practices, including first-part checks and adherence to quality standards.
- Conduct basic manual handling, packing, and movement of materials and components.
- Immediately notify supervisors of issues or hazards that cannot be safely resolved.
- Occasionally contribute to special projects and improvement initiatives as required.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience in a manufacturing, mining, or heavy industrial environment.
- Strong focus on workplace safety and risk management.
- Experience assisting with crane lifts, dogging operations, or overhead gantry crane use.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and hand tool skills.
- Good communication and time-management abilities.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and workshop systems.
- Physically fit and capable of manual handling duties.
- Willingness to work an 8/6 residential roster in Karratha.
Mandatory Licences & Qualifications
- High Risk Work Licence – Forklift (LF)
- High Risk Work Licence – Dogging (DG)
Preferred (Highly Regarded)
- High Risk Work Licence – Rigging (RB or higher)
(or a willingness to obtain as part of your career development) - Experience interpreting technical drawings and work instructions.
- Use of basic measuring devices (tape, calipers, verniers).
- Operation of mobile load shifting equipment.
- Use of power tools and hand-held equipment.
- Experience in mechanical cutting and basic fabrication tasks.
- Knowledge of workshop quality control systems and processes.
