JOB TITLE: Technical Support (Mechanical) - Bulk Material Handling, Cape Town, South Africa
We are looking for a Technical Support Specialist – Bulk Material Handling (Mechanical) to join our team in Cape Town. In this role, you will be the initial technical point of contact for customers, working closely with the Sales team to understand and define customer needs. Your primary responsibility will be to evaluate technical requirements and develop first-level engineering solutions, including preliminary designs, drawings, specifications, and technical data that align with Metso’s product and service capabilities.
This position plays a key role in shaping early-stage opportunities by ensuring technical feasibility and alignment with customer expectations. You will support the quotation process by providing accurate and timely technical input, ensuring compatibility with bulk material handling systems, and helping to craft tailored solutions that meet performance, cost, and delivery targets. Your contributions will directly impact customer satisfaction and the successful transition of opportunities into executable projects.
You will report directly to the Engineering Manager.
This position is mainly located in Cape Town, South Africa.
TEAM YOU BELONG TO
You’ll be part of the Technical Support - Bulk Material Handling Team, collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders including Sales, Supply Chain, Management, Clients, Sub-Contractors, and Engineering. Together, you’ll drive early-stage technical engagement and shape customer solutions that align with our mechanical and electrical capabilities.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Lead first-level technical engagement for assessing equipment functionality related to refurbishment, upgrades, or retrofits
- Prepare and compile technical requirements and supporting engineering data for proposed solutions
- Perform mechanical and electrical engineering design calculations to validate feasibility and performance
- Assist in developing and reviewing functional design specification packages
- Contribute to the creation and review of technical documentation, including installation, operation, and maintenance manuals
- Prepare and review commissioning and start-up procedures to ensure smooth project execution
- Provide on-site engineering support during installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting phases
- Collaborate with Sales to define customer needs and translate them into technical solutions
- Support root cause analysis and technical investigations for existing equipment and field issues
- Coordinate with internal teams such as Engineering, Supply Chain, and Project Management to align technical deliverables
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company engineering practices
- Maintain accurate records of technical engagements, design iterations, and customer feedback
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering processes and solution quality
WHO YOU ARE
- Hold a Technical Degree or higher in Engineering or a related discipline
- Bring 6–8 years of hands-on experience in mechanical engineering
- Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD software for design and documentation
- Experienced in field engineering, including installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Understand Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) concepts and their application in engineering workflows
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of Engineering Data Management (EDM) systems and practices
- Well-versed in relevant international engineering codes, standards, and compliance requirements
- Able to independently organize, plan, and execute tasks with minimal supervision
