As an APC Engineer, you are a technical specialist in Metso’s Advanced Process Control (APC) and Intelligent Instruments solutions. The role focuses on implementing APC for our customers, but also for working with different online condition monitoring tools and methods within the assigned market area, with participation in global projects when needed. The APC Engineer also supports customers throughout project execution and may lead project management activities on selected assignments. In general, measuring and reporting the value that the solutions bring to the customers is essential.

 

The role requires strong process understanding, advanced control expertise, general IT knowledge, excellent communication skills, and regular domestic and international travel.

 

In this position, you will report to the Manager Advanced Control Method 

This position may be located in South Africa, Ghana or France.  

 

TEAM YOU’LL BELONG TO

You will join the Digital Delivery Team and work closely with internal and external stakeholders such as Customers, Engineering, Project Delivery, Account Managers.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

APC & Performance Monitoring Implementation

  • Implement and maintain APC systems, advanced sensing technologies, and data‑driven performance and condition monitoring solutions at remote customer sites until project scope is fully delivered and accepted.
  • Design, configure, test, install, and commission APC and monitoring systems both remotely and on‑site.
  • Monitor APC and performance systems from the office via secure remote access, performing ongoing analysis, tuning, and optimization.
  • Develop KPIs, dashboards, and analytical tools to support condition‑based and data‑based process insights and measurement of the value created

Project Execution & Customer Interaction

  • Serve as the primary technical contact for customers, ensuring clear communication, trust, and professional delivery.
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and contribute to product documentation development.
  • Conduct customer training on APC systems and monitoring tools.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work closely with the Market Area Manager and other APC engineers within the global APC team.
  • Support customers within the assigned area and collaborate on cross‑regional and global optimization projects.

HSE Responsibilities

    • Follow Metso HSE policies and maintain a safe working environment on customer sites and in the office.
    • Participate in HSE reviews, risk assessments, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and company guidelines.

 

WHO YOU ARE

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering/Process Control, or related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience as an APC engineer, or in a similar role.
  • Technical experience in mineral processing and process control.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with control systems, data systems, and analytical tools.
  • Fluent English communication (written & verbal), strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (approx. 40%).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities; self‑motivated and capable of working independently and in teams.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of mineral processing operations in the assigned market area.
  • Experience with Metso APC software or comparable APC/digital solutions.
  • Understanding of OPC/Modbus protocols, industrial networking, data historians, and online condition monitoring systems.
  • Experience with online, remote data collection and data analysis
  • Experience with soft sensors, model‑based control, expert systems, or dynamic process models

Work Environment

The position is based in an office environment but requires frequent assignments at customer mine, concentrator and quarry sites in varying conditions. Appropriate PPE is provided and required.
