JOB TITLE: Lead Engineer - Bulk Material Handling, Cape Town, South Africa
We are looking for a Lead Engineer - Bulk Material Handling to spearhead the creation and refinement of technical data, engineering designs, and specifications for bulk material handling infrastructure throughout South Africa’s port network. This pivotal role ensures that engineering outputs are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable standards across all stages of project execution from initial concept and design through to procurement, construction, and final commissioning. The Lead Engineer will be instrumental in embedding technical excellence throughout the entire project lifecycle.
As a Lead Engineer, you will take the lead in developing and optimizing technical documentation, engineering drawings, and design specifications for bulk material handling systems. Your expertise will be vital in driving engineering quality across refurbishment, upgrade, and retrofit initiatives within South African port facilities.

This position is mainly located in Cape Town, South Africa.
TEAM YOU BELONG TO
You will join the Invoicing Team and work closely with internal /external stakeholders, such as Management, Suppliers, Sub-Contractors, Clients, Supply and the Sales Team.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform and validate engineering calculations to ensure safe and reliable function of equipment during refurbishment, upgrades, or retrofits
- Prepare, review, and approve project and product engineering design drawings and documentation
- Execute process and mechanical engineering design calculations with precision
- Develop, review, and maintain engineering specifications and data sheets
- Establish and oversee quality plans, including equipment Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
- Create and validate functional design specification packages for project delivery
- Prepare and review technical installation, operation, and maintenance manuals
- Draft, assess, and refine commissioning and start-up procedures
- Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure purchased equipment meets technical requirements
- Provide accurate engineering inputs to support project scheduling and cost estimation
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and constructability assessments to ensure project integrity
- Ensure compliance with relevant international and local engineering codes, standards, and best practices
- Deliver technical support during fabrication, construction, and commissioning phases
- Collaborate with QA/QC, HSE, and project management teams to ensure integrated and safe project execution
- Contribute to lessons learned sessions and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain organized engineering documentation and ensure strict revision control
- Supervise junior engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, and technical support
- Review and approve work completed by junior team members to ensure accuracy, compliance, and quality standards
- Assign tasks and monitor progress to balance workloads and meet project deadlines
- Foster professional development through constructive feedback and knowledge sharing
- Encourage a collaborative team environment that promotes innovation and accountability
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Hold a Technical Degree or higher in Engineering
- Possess 8+ years of experience in engineering roles, preferably within bulk material handling or industrial infrastructure
- Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD software
- Familiar with SAP and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) concepts
- Strong understanding of Engineering Data Management (EDM) systems
- Knowledgeable in relevant international codes and standards
- Capable of organizing and planning your own work with limited supervision
