JOB TITLE: Field Service Technician – BMH Equipment – CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA.

We are seeking a Field Service Technician – BMH Equipment to join our Field Services Teams. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing an administrative, technical and training service in respect of safety procedures, standards and safe working practices.  Monitor environmental issues and compile action plans for any deviations identified.  Inform management of all legal requirements. As well as conduct audits to ensure compliance with safety standards. 

In this position, you will report to Field Service Manager – Bulk Hub, Southern Africa.

This position is mainly located in Cape Town, South Africa.

TEAM YOU’LL BELONG TO

You will join the Field Services Team and work closely with internal and external stakeholders, such Management, Metso Staff, Suppliers and Sub-Contractors, Clients and Site Staff.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • The Field Service Technician is responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Stacker Reclaimers and Tipplers.
  • The role requires advanced mechanical and electrical expertise, leadership capability, and a strong focus on safety, quality, and equipment reliability in bulk material handling operations.
  • The Field Service Technician will be hands on role going to site when and as needed.
  • Promote a safety culture with a zero mindset in which safety is the prime concern and will never be compromised
  • Promote the involvement of all employees in improving safety.
  • Conduct full mechanical audits to evaluate equipment performance.
  • Participate in safety meetings to understand site specific requirements.
  • Participate in a pre-start safety review with the Client’s Management to facilitate a “bridging document” to remove any uncertainty/differences between these Rules and the Client’s SMP.
  • Co-ordinate the preparation of project with team members.
  • Identify hazards and risks through analysis and inspection, including personnel, plant and environment.
  • Focus on the elimination of unsafe acts and rectify unsafe conditions quickly.
  • Conduct workplace inspections before and during activities.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on BMH Equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic and automation faults.
  • Supervise and execute major shutdowns, overhauls, and component replacements (bearings, gearboxes, slew drives, rails, brakes, hydraulic cylinders).
  • Conduct commissioning and recommissioning of equipment after installation or major repairs.
  • Interpret technical drawings, manuals, schematics, and OEM documentation.
  • Ensure alignment, calibration, and functional testing of equipment.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead and mentor junior technicians and artisans on-site.
  • Coordinate and supervise contractors as an OEM representative.
  • Act as technical authority during breakdowns and critical interventions

 

Training 

  • Provide on-the-job training and skills transfer.

 

Record keeping and reporting 

  • Responsible for keeping detailed records of the following:
  • Assist in maintenance planning and scheduling with site teams.
  • Compile service reports, fault analyses, root cause reports (RCA), and job completion documentation.
  • Provide feedback to engineering and reliability teams on equipment performance.
  • Support spare parts identification and recommendations as and when needed.

 

Customer & Stakeholder Interaction

  • Liaise with clients, operations, and engineering teams to minimize downtime.
  • Provide technical advice and improvement recommendations to customers.
  • Represent the company professionally on all client sites.

 

Confidential Information 

  • Design information associated with proprietary equipment as well as profit margins and similar commercial information
  • No information regarding accidents or statistics may be shared with the media without the approval of Management 

 

General 

  • Field Service Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day activity of the Bulk equipment.
  • The responsibility of this position encompasses all aspects of safety associated with materials handling bulk equipment, site construction and erection and commissioning etc. and requires a thorough knowledge of all aspects of safety and site safety program.
  • Strong fault-finding skills
  • Knowledge of mining plant operations
  • High safety awareness
  • Ability to work in dusty, outdoor environments
  • Ability to work shifts and standby
  • Good report writing skills
  • Strong understanding of Stacker reclaimers
  • Strong understanding of Wagon Tipplers with car positioners

WHO YOU ARE

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Familiar with the Health and Safety Mining Act as well as The Health and Safety Construction Act
  • Familiar with the process of Inspections and Audits
  • Legal liability

  • Valid driver’s License 
  • Valid passport 
  • High safety awareness and discipline
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and in remote environments
  • Self-motivated with strong planning and organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel and work extended hours when required
  • Valid artisan certification (Millwright / Fitter / Electrician preferred)
  • OEM training on BMH Equipment (advantageous)
  • Computer Literate - Essential 

WHAT SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS (HARD AND SOFT) ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE?

  • 8 –10 years’ experience in bulk material handling equipment
  • Proven experience with stacker reclaimers, tipplers, conveyors, and ship loaders
  • Shutdown and commissioning experience in mining or port environments
  • Technical Background regarding Bulk Material Handling
  • Bulk Material Handling equipment customer relationships
  • Communicator - Handle customer needs & customer complaints
  • Handle stress in breakdown situations
  • Plan & use own initiative
  • Gearboxes, slew systems, rail systems
  • Hydraulics and pneumatics
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness / Ability to travel locally and internationally for Site specific work
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15kg
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Use of keyboards, telephones, copiers, telefax, visits and movement through shops, and travel experiences
  • Climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds at jobsites and customer facilities
  • Harsh environmental conditions due to dust, heat, wind and rain
  • Must be medically fit to perform site specific duties
  • Fit for work at heights and confined spaces
  • Able to work in harsh outdoor and industrial environments
  • Willing to work shifts, weekends, and shutdown period
