Job posting end date: 08/31/2026
Are you ready to shape the future of structural engineering on a global scale? We're seeking a Chief Structural Engineer with deep expertise in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and proven technical leadership to join our Global Engineering team.
In this role, you will set the strategic direction for structural engineering across our mining and mineral processing equipment portfolio, with a strong focus on Bulk Material Handling (BMH) heavy structural equipment — particularly Car Dumpers.
As the highest technical authority in structural engineering within the GBP business, you will combine strategic vision with hands-on expertise, ensuring our solutions deliver uncompromising quality, safety, reliability, and performance worldwide. You will be the go-to expert for the structural integrity of some of the largest and most complex machines Metso designs and delivers to the global mining and ports industry.
As part of Metso's Global Engineering structure, you will provide senior structural engineering expertise to support both Product Engineering (standard product development, design manuals, and continuous improvement) and Project Engineering (customer-specific projects, tenders, and execution), ensuring technical consistency and excellence across the full equipment lifecycle.
What You'll Do
- Set the Technical Strategy: Define the global vision, standards, and best practices for structural engineering and FEA across GBP product lines, with strong focus on BMH heavy equipment.
- Lead Structural Analysis of BMH Flagship Equipment: Own the most complex FEA modeling and structural sign-off for Car Dumpers (Rotary, Side-Discharge, Tandem) and Stockyard Machines (Stackers, Reclaimers, Bucket Wheel Reclaimers, Shiploaders, Train Loading Systems), addressing fatigue, dynamic, seismic, and wind loading challenges typical of large welded structures.
- Support Product & Project Engineering: Provide expert structural analysis and technical guidance to Product Engineering teams (standardization, R&D, upgrades, retrofits) and Project Engineering teams (customer projects, tender support, engineering execution, and field services), ensuring alignment between standard products and project-specific customizations.
- Establish Standards & Governance: Maintain and evolve engineering guidelines and calculation methodologies aligned with FEM 2.131/2.132, ISO 5049, AS 4324, DIN 22261, AISC, and Eurocode, as well as customer specifications from top-tier mining and port clients.
- Drive Innovation & R&D: Lead structural innovation initiatives, advanced simulation methods (FEA, DEM coupling, fatigue prediction, digital twins), and IP development for next-generation BMH equipment.
- Cross-Functional & Customer Leadership: Partner with Product Management, Manufacturing, and Field Services; represent Metso as the senior technical authority before customers, EPCMs, and third-party FEA reviewers.
- Mentor & Build the Technical Community: Develop and grow the global structural engineering community, mentoring engineers and designers across regions and promoting best practices.
- Resolve Critical Issues: Lead root cause analyses for non-conformances, manufacturing deviations, and field failures, ensuring long-term structural integrity of installed equipment.
Who You Are
- Degree in Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering. A Master's degree or PhD in Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- Expert-level proficiency in FEA tools (Ansys Mechanical / Workbench / APDL) and structural design software (STAAD, or equivalent).
- Strong working knowledge of 3D/2D design platforms (Inventor, SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and advanced engineering calculation tools.
- Deep knowledge of BMH-specific design codes and standards, including FEM 2.131/2.132, ISO 5049, AS 4324, DIN 22261, AISC, Eurocode 3, AWS D1.1, and customer-specific technical specifications.
- Solid experience with fatigue analysis (per BS 7608, Eurocode 3 Part 1-9, or equivalent), dynamic analysis, modal analysis, seismic and wind load analysis applied to large heavy structures.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in structural design and analysis of heavy industrial equipment, with substantial hands-on experience in Bulk Material Handling equipment — particularly Car Dumpers.
- Demonstrated track record leading global engineering teams, defining technical standards, and delivering complex BMH projects from concept to commissioning for top-tier mining and port customers.
- Experience interacting with third-party FEA reviewers and independent verification engineers during major capital projects is highly valued.
- Exceptional analytical capability for structural, load-bearing, fatigue, dynamic, and stability calculations of large heavy structures.
- In-depth practical knowledge of welding (heavy plate and structural), casting, NDT methods, bolting techniques, and fabrication of large welded structures typical of BMH equipment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing, transportation, site assembly, and erection challenges of oversized structural components.
- Fluent in interpreting and producing engineering drawings in both Metric and Imperial systems.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, work autonomously, and make sound technical decisions under pressure.
- Outstanding leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to align stakeholders across cultures, geographies, and functions.
- Strong executive communication skills — comfortable presenting technical strategies, FEA results, and engineering recommendations to senior leadership, customers, and external reviewers.
