Introduction to the Role
The Senior Designer plays a critical role in the innovation, development, and implementation of high-quality, cost-effective mechanical solutions that align with Metso’s strategic goals and client expectations. This role involves managing and delivering complex design projects, mentoring junior designers, and collaborating across departments to ensure engineering excellence, customer satisfaction, and product success.
The Role Responsibilities
Technical Design and Engineering
- Develop advanced 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using Inventor.
- Provide innovative design solutions that meet project, performance, and industry standards.
- Execute detailed design analysis including, material selection, and manufacturability checks.
- Validate designs using field data, simulations, and engineering calculations.
- Prepare “As-Built”, installation, and operations and maintenance documentation.
- Lead and review design packages ensuring quality, accuracy, and compliance.
Project Management and Delivery
- Manage design projects from concept to delivery, meeting quality, budget, and schedule targets.
- Plan, coordinate, and monitor project-related design activities in alignment with customer and production timelines.
- Review design hours and contribute to quoting and budgeting for project proposals.
- Support on-site audits, field measurements, and customer consultations as needed.
Leadership and Collaboration
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior designers and engineers.
- Coordinate with project managers, production teams, sales engineers, and clients to deliver cohesive solutions.
- Champion knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
- Contribute to training and onboarding processes for new team members.
System and Process Improvement
- Support and develop design and drafting quality systems and CAD libraries.
- Assist in the management of digital tools (e.g., 3D scan data management, PDM/PLM systems).
- Continuously improve engineering workflows and document control practices.
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Responsibilities
- Demonstrate leadership in HSE by following company policies and proactively identifying and addressing hazards.
- Ensure all engineering solutions adhere to relevant safety and environmental regulations.
- Participate in toolbox meetings and safety briefings.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Essential:
Mechanical Trade or Design qualifications with exposure to materials handling equipment.
5 years’ plus experience in mining, heavy industrial, or bulk materials handling design.
Proficiency in Inventor, AutoCAD, and CAD management systems.
Strong understanding of mechanical systems, fabrication techniques, and material selection.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and deliver complex design solutions.
Well-developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Desirable:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP, Cert IV).
Experience with FEA tools and other engineering analysis software.
Experience in field installation, commissioning, or maintenance.
Exposure to ISO, Australian Standards, or relevant mining industry standards.
Familiarity with digital manufacturing tools (e.g., 3D scanning, BIM).
