We are seeking a Project Mechanical Engineering Specialist to join our Service Operations Support team. You will be responsible for providing support to all departments across all product lines for technical mechanical engineering solutions being offered to customers in the Africa Market Area.

The main application for this position will be that of a hands-on Mechanical Engineering Generalist on a day-to-day level focused on Service and Capex Project Support.

This role will include administrative functions over and above the technical application of Mechanical Engineering, such as Loading and creating information in the ERP platforms in Metso IT. In this position, you will report directly to the Drawing Office Supervisor, MA Africa.

This position is mainly located in Alrode, Alberton.

 TEAM YOU’LL BELONG TO

You will report directly to the Drawing Office Supervisor, MA Africa. You will be required to regularly engage with customers and customer representatives at various levels. You will also work closely with site account managers, regional and market area teams, business line and product line teams, sales development, marketing, and product management teams, the delivery organization, the customer logistics organization, and maintain ongoing relationships with all Metso departments.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Assisting with General Mechanical Arrangement drawings in the Service Projects engineering team
  • Delivering mechanical advisory services at customer sites.
  • Basic customer problem-solving, in terms of the engineered equipment from Metso.
  • Providing specific technical discipline advisory work at site.
  • Ensure proper fulfilment of all SHEQ rules and regulations of Metso and the customer.
  • Perform safety inspection at workplace before starting the job.
  • Perform or participate in job safety analysis (JSA) for any specific job at site.
  • Correct usage of PPE.
  • Reporting any unsafe condition at site. Clarify technical content for project execution and proposals.
  • Interact with various clients during project execution and proposal phases.
  • Guide drawing resources during layout and design of engineering activities.
  • Manage third party design vendors and services when and where required.
  • Responsible to attend and participate in job handover meetings.
  • Ensure all drawings and bill of materials are delivered on-time and within budget.
  • Ensure that all outputs from the department conform to the required drawing, technical standards and specifications.
  • Responsible for promoting uniformity of CAD modelling for continuity.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce internal department procedures and standards.
  • Responsible for consulting with engineers on new or changed designs before processing as jobs.
  • Responsible for maintaining an accurate electronic drawing office file structure for jobs to assist in as-built management and full traceability.
  • Manage proper checking and marking of drawings and bills of material.
  • Initiate, review, and countersign NCRs and engineering change requests.
  • Assist engineers in completing drawings to the required drawing standards.
  • Responsible for facilitating training as well as induction to new drawing resources.
  • Produce technical drawings based on rough specifications, sketches, and calculations from various personnel in the field.
  • Produce drawings and Plant Layouts from PFD and P&ID documents.
  • Construct detailed reports, calculate materials, costs and meet relevant timelines.
  • Create multidimensional graphic views, layouts, and flowcharts using 3D computer-aided drafting (CAD) software.
  • Liaison between engineers and construction professionals.
  • Conduct on-site assessment and inspections for dimensional accuracy.  
  • Design structural solutions and requirements from customer specifications, producing 2D and 3D dimensional drawings.
  • Prepare bills of material, schedules, and other documentation.
  • Evaluate feasibility and site considerations for designs, raising challenges or perceived risks.
  • Responsible for drawing office internal and external audits.

 

FUNCTIONAL PROFILE

 

  • You will be required to travel and visit various locations within the market area such as but not limited to:

 

  • Customer Operational Site.
  • Sub-Contractor Workshops and facilities.
  • Customer Agent corporate facilities.
  • Supply Chain locations such as warehouses, shipping points, Loading points etc.

 

  • Participate and coordinate with cross-organizational project teams to promote a One Organisation approach towards the customer.
  • Ensure efficient information sharing between the customer and relevant parts of Metso’s organization.
  • Responsible for customer relationships and insights via customer visits and co-operation with other business areas.
  • Understand the customer business focus and demonstrate the capability to facilitate Metso’s added value to it from a Mechanical Engineering perspective.
  • Responsible for providing feedback on customer expectations pertaining to the specific project products assigned.
  • Act as the System Operator and Controller for the appropriate Itemization of new Material Designs in the System.
  • Support the development of Solutions/Offerings to customers with input on Mechanical Equipment-related aspects.

 

WHO YOU ARE

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Diploma/Degree in Engineering
  • 15-20 years of background and experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Draughting certificate
  • AutoCAD qualification/certification is an inherent requirement (minimum ‘Advanced Level’)
  • Computer literacy and MS Office skills is preferred
  • Work Experience in mining and minerals processing with reference to the equipment sales environment

WHAT SKILLS, COMPETENCIES, AND REQUIREMENTS (HARD AND SOFT) ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE?

  • Technical professional background with several years of experience in Crushing and Grinding equipment.
  • Background in EPCM processes.
  • Ability to read and develop General Layout Drawings.
  • Integrate existing Library designs into Solution Designs
  • Proficiency with Autocad Design Software
  • Experience with TEqam Centre – Inventor Software platform
  • General Technical background or technically oriented background in mineral processing, Metals Processing & heavy Engineering manufacturing.
  • Computer literate in MS Word, Excel, E-Procurement, Business Management System.
  • Customer business and industry understanding.
  • Good common knowledge of Metso’s portfolio.
  • Services business understanding.
  • Experience to work in large matrix organizations.
  • Experience integrating into cross organizational teams.
  • Experience around Customer Relationship Management.
  • Experience in working in or closely with sales, product management and services. 
  • Logical thinking that can take charge and organize actions in logical practical manner.
  • Ability to be both strategic and tactical. Able to see the big picture, plan and organize effectively on lowest level.
  • Strong drive, and performance orientation.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Being able to work as Single Metso representative on Site.
  • Well-spoken and ability to stay calm and focussed under high pressure situations.

  • Technical understanding of main equipment, Sub-Assemblies and parts and how they fit together.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to perform remote connection interfaces and should be proficient in computer-based interaction.
  • Employee will be required to visit subcontractor facilities where repair and fabrication work is being done and should not have physical or mobility issue that could prevent walking and climbing stairs.
  • Employee will be required to visit Customer sites during setup and execution of projects and should be of good health and general fitness to be able to access and move around the plant infrastructure and small spaces.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus during noisy and busy environment.
  • Ability to use keyboards, telephones, copiers, etc.
  • Ability to analyse and effectively communicate project financial results and factors impacting the results.
