Job Title: Design Engineer, Customer Order Engineering - Pumps, Alrode, Alberton, South Africa

We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our Customer Order Engineering (COE) Pumps team in Alrode, Alberton. In this role, you will focus on developing customized designs for customer orders and quotations, while also contributing to product care initiatives and providing technical support to manufacturing and other COE teams worldwide.

Your daily responsibilities will involve close collaboration with Application & Sales Support, Quality, Procurement, and Production units, both locally and globally. By ensuring that customer-specific requirements are translated into accurate, efficient, and innovative engineering solutions, you will play a vital role in delivering tailored pump systems that meet performance, cost, and delivery expectations.

You will report directly to the Operations Manager.

This position is mainly located in Alrode, Alberton, South Africa.

TEAM YOU BELONG TO

The Customer Order Engineering (COE) Pumps team is a collaborative, globally connected group dedicated to delivering customized pump solutions. Working closely with Application & Sales Support, Quality, Procurement, and Production units, the team ensures customer-specific requirements are transformed into reliable designs and technical support. Their role is central to bridging customer needs with manufacturing excellence, making them a key driver of innovation and product care across Metso’s global operations.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Creates 3D models utilizing Metso current design software.
  • Creates manufacturing drawings, based on standard designs and calculations.
  • Creates drawing of General Arrangements for customers.
  • Assisting with problems regarding assembly or parts incorrectly fabricated etc.
  • Assist by creation of part numbers on Business system.
  • Performs/initiate basic strength evaluations/calculations.
  • Maintain drawing/Vault database.
  • Perform documented product safety review as a part of the daily design process
  • Develops new solutions independently and in project teams.
  • Takes part in design reviews.
  • Identifies needs for design changes from production requirements as well as quality and procurement needs.
  • Maintains good order and efficiency in his/her work.
  • Participates as team member and sometimes a leader in order projects
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties and/or other special projects as required.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering with relevant focus area towards Design Engineering, or 10 years of relevant experience in Mechanical Engineering and design.
  • Experience in use of 2D Drafting and 3D CAD modeling tools.
  • Experience of designing using standard machine elements and construction steel materials.
  • Experience of designing centrifugal pumps or similar machines, castings, and welded design

  • Other COE Engineers based in other regions
  • Product Engineering (std product and technical alignment)
  • Planning, Purchase and Assembly departments (Order)
  • Proposal support (Quote)
  • Sales & Service Organizations (Quote, order change, technical questions)
  • Quality (deviation approval and supplier feedback)

WHAT SKILLS, COMPETENCIES AND REQUIREMENTS (HARD AND SOFT) ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THIS ROLE?

  • Positive and solution-oriented interaction skills with counterparts.
  • Preference on efficient results-oriented approach before analytical and in-depth thinking (due to order execution org).
  • Preference on working well in team but can also drive task as individual contributor.
  • Deadline focus and completes assigned tasks in the time given with own responsibility to adopt scope to given plan and priority. Communicates well with requesters on status.
  • Service mindset with strong focus on business growth and profitability.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Operates per ethical principles in all situations.
  • Maintains and develops highest safety culture and standards.
